What do I need to make a payment?
You’ll need the following information about the person you’re sending money to:
- Their full name, as shown on their account
- Their bank’s address
- Their IBAN. ‘IBAN’ means ‘International bank account number. It’s a mixture of letters and numbers and is 15 to 33 characters long.
How much does it cost to make a payment?
We don’t charge a Barclays fee for payments you make in our app or Online Banking.
You can send a SEPA payment to this country. SEPA means ‘Single Euro Payments Area’. It’s a way of making quick, easy and safe euro payments within the European Economic Area (EEA).
We’ll find out whether your recipient’s bank accepts SEPA payments before you send the money.
If we need to convert the payment into another currency, we’ll use the latest Barclays reference exchange rate and will apply a currency conversion charge. We set the Barclays reference exchange rate based on the market exchange rates for the two currencies.
The conversion charge we apply will be no greater than:
- 2.75% for personal and Premier customers
- 2% for Business customers.

So that your payment will get through, you need to make sure that:
- You spell the recipient’s name correctly
- You only send a payment in yen to a corporation, and not an individual
- The recipient must tell their bank that they’re expecting your payment.
You’ll need the following information about the person you’re sending money to:
- Their full name, as shown on their account
- Their account number
- Their address
- Their bank’s address
- The SWIFTBIC or the CNAPS code for the bank you're sending money to. A CNAPS code (China National Advanced Payment System code) is the Chinese equivalent of a UK sort code. It’s 12 digits long and starts with ‘/CN’.
You’ll also need to give a detailed reason you’re sending the payment (called ‘Purpose of payment’).
